Five not-so-crazy rule changes MLB should consider next

If MLB wants even more change after instituting pace-of-play tweaks for the 2017 season, perhaps it’s time for Manfred & Co. to give the sport a more complete makeover.

Despite baseball’s greatness and, yes, it’s still pretty great there are still areas in which tweaks could bring benefits, whether to players or to fans. So while we’re still talking change, I have a few thoughts.

Here are five rule changes I would support if MLB chose to make them. Settle down, purists, it won’t be that bad.

Game Mens Kobe Bryant Jersey Burns, then a spry 111, successfully hired nine major leaguers to work at his plant to give the team an edge in order to win a bet against the owner of Shelbyville’s power plant.

Of course, most of the ringers met various obstacles that kept them off the field Griffey’s fate was particularly concerning resulting in a surprisingly dramatic game that ended with the walkoff beaning of Springfield Nuclear bench player Homer Simpson.

But the story of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant ringers endures as a study of what might have been.

Elite Mens Rodger Saffold Jersey One of baseball’s most likeable superstars, Thome is the rare modern-day slugger who has never been connected to PEDs in any tangible way, though the mere fact that he pounded 612 homers in the Steroid Era might have raised some eyebrows. He won’t get as many votes as Jones, who was a much better all-around player. Thome hit tons of home runs, but he wasn’t a great defender and only finished finished higher than sixth in the MVP vote once (a fourth-place finish in 2003 with the Phillies).

Rookie pitcher Kyle Freeland was brilliant over seven scoreless innings

Game Kids William Perry Jersey Now, the Bleacher Report explanation is much more plausible — and NFL executives no longer deserve the benefit of the doubt that their decisions are football-related.

They might be able to get away with them being money-related, except that there is nothing definitive about what Kaepernick wants to get paid. Then again … $18.5 million for Mike Glennon. To be a starter.

It’s not worth the electricity needed to type it, or to trot out the stats that say Kaepernick was not terrible in his 11 games last season. It’s not worth repeating that he had not played in a year because of multiple surgeries and is healthier now than he has been in two seasons. Not worth the reminder that the 49ers’ new management is rebuilding the entire roster from scratch, which tells you Kaepernick wasn’t exactly working with the same weapons Matt Ryan was.

Of course this isn’t about football. It’s about maintaining the status quo, or what NFL teams believe that to be. It’s about not ruffling feathers, or at least the feathers NFL teams care about ruffling.

Rookie pitcher Kyle Freeland was brilliant over seven scoreless innings, scattering six hits and striking out three batters while inducing 12 ground-ball outs.

Doing most of the damage for the Rockies offense was left fielder Gerardo Parra, who went 2 for 4, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

The Giants now have the worst record in the National League at 6-13 and will be without their ace for the near future. Madison Bumgarner is out indefinitely after injuring his shoulder in a dirt bike accident. The Giants are off to their worst start since 1983, but manager Bruce Bochy is confident they can get things turned around.

Game Kids Desmond Trufant Jersey The last time they were swept by the Rockies, the Giants went on to win the National League pennant.

NFL Draft 2017: 49ers move back into first round to end Reuben Foster’s free fall

Reuben Foster kept falling and the 49ers made a move to get him.

After the Seahawks traded down from 26 to 31 so Atlanta could move up to take UCLA defensive end Takkarist McKinley Thursday in Philadelphia, the 49ers made a deal with the Seahawks to pick the Alabama linebacker — their second first-round pick of the evening.

The Seahawks, who got an additional third- and seventh-round pick from the Falcons, will pick 34th overall on Friday and have San Francisco’s fourth-round pick (111th overall) on Saturday.

Foster had some off-field issues, but was still considered a top-10 pick despite being sent home from last month’s NFL Combine following an encounter with a hospital employee during a medical check. He also turned in a diluted urine sample, which he said was a result of drinking too much water while trying to shake an illness.

Both those incidents were wiped clean by most NFL teams prior to Thursday. It was a shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in February that pushed him down the board.

Foster should be a plug-and-play linebacker for the 49ers, who need help at the position. Moving back into the first round gave the 49ers two defensive picks on Day 1 after taking Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas with the third overall pick.

Though the 6-foot, 230-pound Foster is a bit undersized for the position, he made an exponential jump in his play last year after shedding 20 pounds. Foster was a first-team All-American and the Butkus Award winner as the nation’s top linebacker. He led the Tide with 115 tackles, 13 for loss, and had five sacks.

Foster had 73 tackles, eight for loss, and two sacks as a junior and had nine pass breakups. He has added value as a special teams player through his first two seasons at Alabama. Though a middle linebacker for the Tide, Foster’s ideal fit in the NFL is as a weakside outside linebacker in a 4-3 defense.

Is this finally Avisail Garcia’s breakthrough season?

Elite Mens Matt Read Jersey There are 41 relievers who finished April with a 0.00 ERA, including seven who have thrown at last 10 innings. That group includes a couple of familiar names Andrew Miller and Wade Davis but no one has thrown more scoreless innings than White Sox right-hander Anthony Swarzak, the 31-year-old who has struck out 14 and allowed only four base-runners (three hits, one walk) in 12 1/3 innings.

Is this finally Avisail Garcia’s breakthrough season? White Sox fans have been hoping to see the talented youngster tap into his potential for a while now, but he hadn’t been able to find much in the way of consistency he had a .250/.308/.380 slash line from 2014-16. Garcia was outstanding in April, though, leading the AL with a .368 average while driving in 20 and producing a 1.029 OPS.

Unlike last fall, Cleveland is expecting All-Star outfielder Michael Brantley and starters Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar to start the season in full health. All-Star slugger Edwin Encarnacion, whose 193 home runs since the start of the 2012 season trail only Chris Davis (197) among big-league hitters, could be the missing piece the Tribe needs to win it all.
Game Steve McNair Jersey
The Indians never lost more than three in a row last season — the only team in the majors to do that. With the Big 3 (Andrew Miller, Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw) returning in the bullpen, the Tribe could very well emulate the Royals’ 2015 season and go from Game 7 World Series losers the year prior to winning it all the next season.

Report: Physical altercation between Brock Osweiler, Bill O’Brien prompted trade

By Week 17 of the 2016 NFL season, the Texans had already found out quarterback Brock Osweiler wasn’t worth the four-year, $72 million contract they offered him.

Limited Womens Zach Mettenberger Jersey But Osweiler’s subpar play wasn’t that caused Houston to trade him away to the Browns at the start of the NFL year — it was a physical altercation between Osweiler and Texans coach Bill O’Brien.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation (via ProFootball Talk), Osweiler reacted negatively when O’Brien asked him to start the second half of the Texans’ Week 17 game against the Titans. Backup-turned-starter Tom Savage had injured himself on a quarterback sneak in the second quarter and was told at halftime he wouldn’t be able to finish the game, requiring Osweiler to finish.

Wright was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column, in May 2015, and was sidelined more than four months of that season. He was healthy to begin 2016 but did not play after May 27, eventually having fusion surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck.

Wright made his spring training debut Saturday, serving as the designated hitter. Afterward, he acknowledged the hurdles that remain to be cleared for him to return to playing in the field.

Because of some of the effects of surgery, it has taken up to this point a little longer than expected because you’re really having to almost re-teach your body how to throw, Wright told reporters (via Newsday). That’s the area that was affected from the surgery, kind of your neck and shoulder area. It’s challenging, that’s for sure.

His injury all but ensures Jose Reyes will open the season as the Mets’ third baseman.

Red Sox utility man Brock Holt goes on 10-day DL with vertigo

The Red Sox have placed Brock Holt on the 10-day disabled list as he battles vertigo.

The utility man, who has played every field position but catcher and centerfield the past two years, is off to a slow start at the plate, going 2-for-15 in five games. He hit seven home runs in 290 at-bats last year, with an OPS of .705.
Robert Golden Game Jersey
While it’s bad news for Holt, it saves the Red Sox the trouble of making another roster decision. With Jackie Bradley Jr. returning from the DL to start Friday night against the Orioles, someone else would have had to head for the minors to clear a roster spot. Bradley had been on the 10-day DL with a sprained knee.
Michael Jordan Game Jersey
The idea behind the documentary was to take fans where they’d never been, to show them things they didn’t normally see, to let them hear things they didn’t normally hear.

Of particular interest on that front were the in-game conversations between a manager and his team.

What does he say during a mound visit? What does he discuss with his pitching coach? What does he say between innings?

A simpler way to put it: What in the world does a manager actually do?

The Cardinals are going to be competitive this season, there’s no question. Now, with a young rotation that features Carlos Martinez at the top and locked up for a while, they’re one of the most well-balanced clubs in baseball. They could stand more bullpen help, but at this point it’s not a necessity. St. Louis stood pat aside from signing Dexter Fowler, and it was the right move.

Bears, in a no-win situation, are both drama and comedy by their own fault

Previously on Real Draft Rooms of Chicago, Ryan said the gossip that he left John out of the loop when he traded up to draft Mitchell was so false, and that John was on board 100 percent.

The report on that rift between Ryan Pace and John Fox over Mitchell Trubisky during the NFL Draft was later walked back, and when the general manager and coach spoke publicly, they told a convincing account of how they scouted the quarterback.

But that’s old news. Now, we find out Mike is the one who didn’t know about Mitchell, and now that he does, he wonders what he’s even doing here.

Mixon ran a sub-4.5-second 40-yard dash at Oklahoma’s pro day last month, and enough teams showed up to make it clear that someone was not going to let him slide down the draft board too far. At that pro day, he apologized again for the incident.

Whatever he said to the Bengals brass did the trick. Regardless of observers who couldn’t believe how quickly the NFL got comfortable with players in that situation — less than three years after they were consumed by the Rice mess, as well as similar entanglements surrounding Adrian Peterson, Greg Hardy and Ray McDonald — Mixon and his baggage have a home.

Draft picks: South Alabama TE Gerald Everett, Eastern Washington WR Cooper Kupp, Boston College S John Johnson, Texas A&M Josh Reynolds, Eastern Washington OLB Samson Ebukam, Tulane DT Tanzel Smart, Virginia Tech FB Sam Rogers, Pittsburgh DE Ejuan Price

Keep in mind Les Snead remained GM as Sean McVay became head coach, and this looked a lot like previous Snead drafts, only without a first-rounder. There were small-school reaches and positional projects, nothing to push the dial forward around Jared Goff and Todd Gurley or to flank Aaron Donald wih anything aspiring. Kupp is the key to saving face.

49ers cut undrafted free agent receiver K.D. Cannon

A sad situation with Smith took an even worse turn when the 2015 second-round pick recently re-tore the same ACL he injured at the end of his rookie season. With Smith already declared out for the 2017 campaign, the Jets showed they are ready to move on by grabbing two other wide receivers (Alabama’s ArDarius Stewart and Cal’s Chad Hansen) in Rounds 3 and 4, respectively.

Not all of them will prove elite-level players or even make the 53-man roster, but Marinelli was given more talent to work with after the Cowboys used nine draft picks on defense. The group was highlighted by Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton and cornerbacks Chidobe Aquzie (Colorado) and Jourdan Lewis (Michigan) in Rounds 1, 2 and 3.

K.D. Cannon’s goal of becoming an NFL receiver just took a major hit.

Cannon, an early entrant out of Baylor who went undrafted in April, has been cut by the 49ers after getting signed by the team on Monday. He earned a $45,000 signing bonus, tied for fourth-most among undrafted free agents in 2017.

The 6-0, 185-pound receiver was a go-to pass catcher for Baylor as a junior in 2016, earning career-highs in catches (87), yards (1,215) and receiving touchdowns (13). He left the Bears program as the third-leading receiver in school history in all three categories (195 catches for 3,113 yards and 27 touchdowns).

But despite his athleticism, the NFL Draft committee suggested Cannon remain in school for his senior year, as he faced questions regarding his route-running and ball-catching skills.

Lavar Ball wants you to pay more for Lonzo’s first sneaker than the LeBron XIV

LaVar Ball and Big Baller Brand hope to release a debut sneaker for Lonzo Ball’s rookie season. The price tag will be in the $200 range, according to The Vertical’s Nick DePaula.

That would price the UCLA standout’s signature kicks ahead of All-Stars and MVP candidates like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and James Harden.

I’m not going to the White House, safety Devin McCourty told TIME. Basic reason for me is I don’t feel accepted in the White House.

The reason that some players don’t feel accepted in the White House may stem from Trump’s pattern of racist business practices and politics, and his refusal to disavow campaign support from hate groups. Patriots players of different races — from Brady and Amendola to Bennett and LeGarrette Blount — declined to show up citing a variety of reasons. One player had a surgery scheduled for his dog. Another mixed up a few dates and didn’t want to miss a family gathering. Logan Ryan, a corner, was too busy moving to Tennessee. Bennett opted to appear on Chelsea Handler’s live show.

Fundamentally, we don’t match up, Bennett said about Trump. Some people’s house, I just don’t want to go to.

Their absences muted the occasion. The players who did come celebrated an all-time great win with their bosses and a fraction of their teammates. Reporters who flew in to watch wandered around campus grounds aimlessly looking for something to do. Rob Gronkowski’s unannounced drop-in on noted Pats fan Sean Spicer stole the day but, beyond that, business ticked away as usual.

Womens Chris Jones Jersey It’s interesting, this is our fifth Super Bowl in the last 16 years, and every time we’ve had the privilege of going to the White House, a dozen of our players don’t go. This is the first time it’s gotten any media attention, Kraft told the Today Show.

Rockets and Thunder forget how to play basketball in ridiculous NBA playoff game ending

The NBA playoffs are supposed to be a display of some of the best basketball in the world and I honestly cannot tell you what was going on in the final seconds of Game 4 in the Rockets-Thunder series. The entire fourth quarter was strange but we went into another stratosphere with about 25 seconds left. Here is what went down:

When the mic turned back to Milbury and the camera replayed Subban dancing a bit during warm-ups, he let loose on a weird rant.
Vince Dunn Authentic Jersey
A transcript, for the video-impaired:

He’s got a tremendous personality and sometimes you’ve got to keep it under control. I know it’s a new day and age and everybody wants to be on Instagram or Twitter. But you’ve got to keep focus. This is a tough game. When I see this I start to think maybe (Predators coach) Peter Laviolette ought to give him a rap on the head and say, Hey P.K. focus in, we’ve got a game tonight and you don’t have to be a clown out there.’

And he will. He’s been a clown in the past and we’ve seen him act like a clown but when he’s serious and focused he’s one hell of a player.
A couple of things here.

First, dancing a little in warm-ups doesn’t determine how good Elite Hockey Athlete Player-Man P.K. Subban is during a playoff game. Keith Jones rightly called Milbury out on this point. If you think Subban is doing that just to get on TV … I don’t know what to tell you. Jones pointed out that Subban always warms up a little differently. And anyway, who cares!

Secondly, it’s more than a little uncomfortable to hear a white broadcaster implore a white head coach to go to his star black athlete and rap him on the head. It’s the poorest of poor choice of words and, frankly, irresponsible.
